This book was written as a companion for caregivers. I am the friend who understands the emotional rollercoaster of being involved with caring for a loved one tragically left with a minimal quality of life due to an unfortunate life saving measure. I am the friend who shares the deepest pain, the torturous amount of guilt, and the inner thoughts of wishing for death. I am also the friend who finds happiness in the smallest moments, shares the strength of a family who sticks together, and finds forgiveness and hope when life takes unexpected turns. Through my story, medical professionals should see the necessity of communicating and including the family on decisions for the incapacitated. “Being There” takes you along as it happened and shares how hospice was able to provide peace in the end - for everyone. Back Cover “As I sat at his bedside, I watched his chest rise and fall - hoping it was his last breath. How cruel is that to say? It’s not, if you truly love someone and know it’s time for God to take over.” A daughter takes you with her on a nineteen month journey after her father suffered a massive stroke. She shares the unbelievable tragedy of a life saving measure, a feeding tube, which prolonged the inevitable with pain, misery and heartache for all. She was the baby of the family and now her role had changed. She fought hard to find the inner strength to be strong when her father was weak. She brought life and beauty to him when he couldn’t see it for himself. She shares stories along the way, life lessons, and the heroes she would never have met. All the while, she spoke for her father’s silence, held his hand when there was nothing more she could give, and together watched the beauty of the crape myrtle trees come to life each summer.

Reviewed by Fiza Pathan for Readers' FavoriteBeing There, a memoir of a physically and mentally deteriorating father, has been captured on paper with love and empathy clearly seen in the writings of author Aimi Medina. It is the memoir of Medina’s father Leonard, who in his early eighties suffers from senile dementia after a severe stroke, and loses his language skills and control over his physical self. It takes the reader on a journey of introspection where the elderly are concerned, through the deterioration of Leonard from the nursing home to the hospice center. Being There is a memoir penned by Leonard’s daughter, written in simple words but with a powerful message, especially for the youth of today who are looking after their terminally ill parents or grandparents. It is a stunning narrative of deep emotions where hope is strength and where in the lives of a loving family the terminally ill are but a piece of this large network of misery, with a dash of faith to make it possible to see that an elderly loved one’s future is better than the painful present.
Being There is a spell binding read by Medina and can be a vital book for care-givers of the elderly. In a world which is so self-centered and materialistic, Medina has shown us that there are still caring families just like hers who look after their loved ones. I applaud Medina on her courage to write this memoir which will, I am sure, serve as an eye opener for all those who have been torn apart by the separation of a dear loved one. I admire Medina’s family for facing death courageously, knowing also that they are not alone in this as they realize when they interact with other patients of the nursing home. Being There is a book meant to be read by all grandchildren and is a great self-help book to realize that when one's loved one is suddenly sick, the whole family becomes involved indirectly with the patient. This memoir is heart-wrenching but is still a beautiful read. Well done, Medina.

Being There A Daughter Voice for her Father Silence edition by Aimi Medina Evelyn Medina Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
This is one of those books you finish reading with a trembling sigh. It's not a book to make the reader laugh or feel good, but one that aches with honesty and love. I read the whole book in one afternoon simply because I couldn't put it down, and I know I'll be thinking of Aimi and her family in the days to come.
The book was originally written as the author's private diary, as she, her siblings and her mother cared for her father after a debilitating stroke. It wasn't until after her father had passed away that she decided to share the emotional roller coaster, the grieving and the bureaucratic issues her family faced. Her hope is that the reader will find comfort and perhaps some knowledge as they face their own role as caretaker of a dying family member.
It's not a depressing book, though, as the author shares the importance of family unity and pre-planning for end-of-life decisions. Her family supported each other throughout the final two years of her father's life, and fought unscrupulous lawyers and nursing home apathy as they tried to give her father's last days dignity and peace. There are quite a few touching B&W photos of the author, her father and mother and other family members, which show the love between them all.
Many of the issues in this book were familiar to me from helping my own family members - hospice care, living wills and financial issues. But the author made me realize that a "living will" has to be very detailed in order to let family know exactly what measures should be taken and when they should stop. It's also important to have both spouse's names on accounts in order to allow access to money during a long-drawn-out illness.
This book is a painful and tender goodbye between a father and a daughter, and the compassionate voice of a friend for others who will face the same farewell.
I received a complimentary copy of "Being There" directly from the author, in exchange for writing an honest review. I wasn't asked to leave a positive review, nor was I paid or otherwise compensated. It's my honor to award five stars to a book written with such emotion and faith.
anyone who has ever loss a loved one can relate to this book. beautiful lying written. passionately written. Absolutely moving
This book is a poignant memoire of a daughter dealing with the effects of her father's stroke and the impact it had on her family. Written in a diary style format, it chronicles the day to day struggles of dealing with the effects of this major life change. The author reveals the depth of her emotional struggle with sadness and grace, and skillfully avoids the sense of self-pitying. This book was a beautiful tribute to both of the author's parents and it would be extremely well received by anyone who has to deal with a traumatic event or illness of a parent.
Disclaimer I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a memoir told through the eyes of a daughter after her father has a stroke. It covers the 19 months that their family battled through, trying to do the right thing by him while remaining strong for each other. I'm not going to lie I cried several times and had to take breaks from reading it. However, it is a very thought-provoking and inspirational book. It really puts these kind of things into perspective for a reader, especially for someone who's never had to deal with any kind of severe healthcare crisis such as a stroke. You're never too young to start putting paperwork in place, and this story definitely explains the need to not only have it, but to also make sure it's thorough and very straight-forward. I would advise anyone over the age of 20 to read this, if not to provoke you to set your own affairs in order, then to at least give you the courage to have that conversation with your older family members. I know I will.
Thank you, Aimi, for sharing your family's story.
